How to Play Footle — the Daily Football Wordle

Footle is a football twist on Wordle: instead of guessing a five-letter word, you're trying to name a mystery professional footballer. You get up to ten guesses, and every guess reveals a set of clues that tell you how close you are. A brand-new mystery player is chosen every day at midnight GMT, and it's the same player for everyone in the world. Play today's Footle here.

The goal

Name the hidden player in as few guesses as possible. There are no letters to fill in — you simply start typing a real player's name, pick them from the list, and Footle grades your guess against six attributes of the secret player.

How the clues work

After each guess, you'll see a row of tiles comparing your player to the mystery one across six categories:

  • Club — the team they currently play for.
  • League — the competition their club plays in.
  • Nationality — the country they represent.
  • Position — where they line up (striker, winger, midfielder, defender, keeper).
  • Age — their age in years.
  • Rating — their overall rating.

The colours are your compass. A green tile means an exact match — you've nailed that attribute. A gold tile means you're close but not exact: for example, the same league but a different club, or the same continent but a different nation. For Age and Rating, a small up or down arrow tells you whether the mystery player's number is higher or lower than your guess, so you can zero in fast.

Step by step

  • Type any real footballer's name into the search box and select them.
  • Read the six tiles: greens are locked in, golds are near-misses, arrows point you toward the right age and rating.
  • Use what you've learned to make a smarter next guess — one that matches the greens and moves toward the arrows.
  • Repeat until the whole row turns green. You have ten attempts.

Strategy tips

  • Open with a versatile star. A well-known player from a big league (say a Premier League forward) gives you the most information on your first guess — you'll immediately learn the league, position and rough rating direction.
  • Follow the golds. A gold league tile with a different club is a huge clue: the player is in that league, just at another team. Guess a different club in the same league next.
  • Let the arrows narrow the age and rating. If the rating arrow points down, don't guess a higher-rated player next — aim below your last guess.
  • Combine clues. Once you know league + position + nationality, the pool of possible players is usually tiny. Think about who fits all three.
  • Don't waste guesses on wild names. Every guess should respect the greens you've already locked in.

Sharing your score

When you solve it (or run out of guesses), Footle gives you a tidy grid of coloured squares and a score like "3/10". Share it to challenge friends without spoiling the answer — the squares show how you did, not who the player was.

When does it reset?

A new mystery player is set every day at 00:00 GMT, worldwide. Miss a day and you simply pick up with the next one. Ready to test yourself? Play today's Footle, or learn the other games in our Connections, Tier Drop and Transfer Roulette guides.
